Eventually, and individually, they found the same self-publishing company and were put in contact with each other early last year when they combined their efforts giving talks and attending book festivals. Finding little (or no) support from book store chains and local book festivals and, feeling a little like David when he first saw Goliath, they decided to hold their own festival and invited other local writers to join them.
Some of these authors were self-published, some had been traditionally published on a fairly small scale and others had gone through traditional publishing but had experienced problems with their publishers to such a degree, they were now looking at the self-publishing route.
The first festival was held at Thurgarton, Nottinghamshire in November, 2006. It was opened by the Lord Mayor of Nottingham, Councillor Des Wilson and attended by the Vice Chairman of Nottinghamshire County Council, Councillor John Allin and his Lady, Mrs Mavis Allin. It was a lovely day, providing everyone with new contacts and information and encouraged us to go ahead with our second event which will be held on April 28th, again at Thurgarton. It also became the foundation of New Writers UK which we established to let new and undiscovered, or unsupported, writers know they are not alone.
The rest, as they say, is the future!
